The megacity Awakens to Hazardous Smog Following Celebrations

On Tuesday morning inhabitants of the world's most polluted city found themselves exposed to extremely polluted air that registered in the "alarming" level.

Extremely High Pollution Measurements

Various sections of the capital registered an AQI over 500, which equals a tenfold increase over the recommended threshold recommended by the WHO.

Particular areas, levels of dangerous airborne particles soared to of eighteen hundred, amounting to 15 to 20 times above acceptable limits.

Fireworks Ban and Current Changes

Since 2020, the government had implemented a total prohibition on the sale and use of fireworks during the Festival of Lights due to their substantial impact to the deadly haze that covers the city as winter sets in.

Nevertheless earlier this year, the newly elected local leadership appealed to the supreme court to propose a modification of the ban.

Officials advocated for allowing "green crackers" – which have been doubted by conservation groups as being only roughly 30 percent reduced emissions – as a balance between "heritage and ecological concerns".

Judicial Decision and Reality

Despite concerns of public health and environmental campaigners, judicial authorities approved the appeal, mandating that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be used during designated hours throughout the Diwali.

Throughout the festival evening, there was extensive violation of the designated hours across the city, with insufficient regulation regarding whether the pyrotechnics being used were actually the eco-friendly type.

Many monitoring devices throughout the capital showed contamination peaking around midnight to some of the worst levels recorded during Diwali in at least recent memory.

International Effects

The proliferation of fireworks during Diwali also sparked a controversy with neighbouring the neighboring country, with representatives in Pakistani Punjab pointing to declining atmospheric conditions in Lahore on pollutants coming from neighboring India following the events.

Persistent Pollution Problem

Extremely elevated levels of atmospheric toxins in the capital have remained as a significant issue for more than 15 years, with the problem continuing to worsen.

During celebratory seasons, the concentration of toxic airborne contaminants in the air has been found to increase dramatically to seventy percent above the peak levels ever documented in the Chinese city, which was once viewed as the world's most polluted city.

Multiple Pollution Sources

This crisis in the city is resulting from a combination of different contributors including heavy vehicle emissions, dust, construction activities, waste incineration and haze from farm burning in nearby areas of farming communities.

Throughout these areas, rural residents illegally set their fields on fire to expedite field preparation, producing dangerous smog that remains stagnant over the metropolitan area as cooler air descends.

Public Health and Economic Consequences

Public health and economic impact on the nearly 33 million inhabitants residing in the metropolitan zone is substantial, according to various investigations.

The contaminated air causes elevated rates of nervous system, cardiovascular and breathing conditions, and can potentially cause oncological diseases.

Environmental contamination is projected to be accounting for ten thousand premature deaths each year in Delhi.
