Micky van de Ven found the net on two occasions as Tottenham prolonged their unbeaten run on the road in the Premier League and delivered the Toffees their first defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton were unbeaten in their last five matches at their new ground at the dockside location, having left their historic home behind after 133 years at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Tottenham's leader the Dutchman struck twice from set-pieces in the first half to put their strong form at jeopardy, and they were unable to mount a comeback before the midfielder - set up by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - headed home a third to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender thought he had equalized the scores five minutes after Van de Ven's opener, glancing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, missed a number of chances, while the Italian goalkeeper made a series of excellent saves to ensure Tottenham went five away games without defeat in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee intervened, instructing the match official to check the score on the pitchside monitor and the official decided that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in offside positions and had impeded with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win elevates the manager's side into third place in the division, five points off local foes and table-toppers the Gunners.

The Merseyside club remain in 14th position and sit half a dozen points ahead of the relegation zone.

Spurs breakdown: The defender fulfils role at each end of pitch

After a uninspiring midweek display in the Champions League against the French side, where they mustered a mere attempts on goal, Frank opted for Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The summer signing was unable to influence the game before being replaced for the substitute after an hour on the field, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the end.

Defender the Dutchman converted into an offensive threat to be feared.

Tottenham's first goal came from a well-worked set-piece play, with the midfielder directing the ball back across the six-yard box for an free the defender to head home.

And Ven de Ven - filling in as captain in Cristian Romero's unavailability - added his next goal in added time as he rose above the England keeper to nod in.

Van de Ven was just as impressive in defensive duties, combining effectively with Kevin Danso as the duo handled superbly with the 34 crosses thrown their way by the opposition.

Everton analysis: Everton missing finishing touch

The club's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it seems the novelty may have faded somewhat and supporters flocked to the exits after Sarr's third for Tottenham.

The break in Everton's winning streak at home will not be a major worry for David Moyes, but their attacking woes will be.

The forward and the other striker - the Everton's two recognised strikers - had scored just one league goal combined before Sunday's match.

And they were unable to add to that miserable tally on a wet and gloomy evening on Merseyside.

Beto's form was summed up when he chose to bicycle-kick a clear chance from close range, even with having space and opportunity to reposition for a simpler shot that would have tested the keeper.

The substitute, as well, was unable to influence the game after replacing the starter in the second half.

It wasn't for a shortage of opportunity. Most of Everton's offensive moves came through the winger and the forward, who tirelessly delivered dangerous balls into the Spurs box.

Spurs: Spurs travel to Newcastle's ground on Wednesday, 29 October for their fourth-round Carabao Cup tie against the Magpies.
